The first week of August is a special time for us here at CCMH. It’s World Breastfeeding Week, and it kicks off National Breastfeeding Month! This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and support all the new moms on their feeding journeys.
We know that becoming a new mom is a whirlwind of emotions, questions, and decisions. One of the biggest topics on every new mom’s mind is how to feed their baby. While breastfeeding is a natural process, it doesn’t always come naturally, and we want you to know that you are not alone. We are here to support you every step of the way.
Breastfeeding Benefits for Mom and Baby
Breastfeeding is truly a beautiful and beneficial experience for both mom and baby, offering a powerful start that lasts a lifetime. For infants, breast milk is the ultimate superfood! It’s a dynamic and living substance that changes to meet your baby’s unique needs as they grow.
The first milk, called colostrum, is often referred to as “liquid gold” for good reason. It’s thick, rich in antibodies, and acts like your baby’s first vaccine. It helps to build their immune system from day one. As your milk matures, it continues to be packed with essential nutrients, antibodies, and white blood cells that help protect them from infections and illnesses. Studies have shown that breastfed babies have a lower risk of common ailments like ear infections and respiratory illnesses. What’s more, in the long term, it can even lower the risk of allergies, asthma, and childhood obesity.
However, the benefits don’t stop with the baby. For moms, breastfeeding is a crucial part of the postpartum recovery process. The act of nursing releases the hormone oxytocin, which helps your uterus contract and return to its pre-pregnancy size more quickly. It also burns extra calories, which can help you get back to your pre-baby weight. Beyond these physical advantages, breastfeeding can reduce your risk of certain cancers, including breast and ovarian cancer. And, of course, that skin-to-skin contact is an incredible way to bond with your little one, helping you both feel calm and secure in your new life together.
A Breastfeeding-Friendly Environment
At CCMH, we are proud to be a breastfeeding-friendly hospital. Our goal is to create a supportive and encouraging environment where you feel comfortable and confident in your feeding choices. Therefore, our team of nurses and doctors are trained to help you get started with breastfeeding right after birth, ensuring that the crucial first latch is a success. We believe in providing you with the knowledge and tools you need to feel empowered.
Your Breastfeeding Support System
Breastfeeding can sometimes be challenging, and that’s okay. Whether you’re concerned about your baby’s latch, milk supply, or just have questions, our lactation consultants are here to help. They are certified experts dedicated to providing you with personalized, one-on-one guidance and reassurance.
Furthermore, our support for you continues even after you leave the hospital. We offer return visits with a lactation consultant for a weight check and assistance with breastfeeding, including latching, pumping, and general support. To schedule an appointment, visit our website or call 580.250.5253. We can also assist you in finding a breast pump that’s right for your individual needs.
But the support doesn’t stop there! We invite you to join our Breastfeeding/Infant Feeding Class, which offers valuable information and support for both new and experienced mothers. We meet on the first Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. in the Fieldstone conference room. Our instructors can assess your latch, provide positioning tips, and address any issues causing pain or discomfort. It’s a great way to connect with other new mothers, share experiences, and remember that you’re not on this journey alone.
Our Promise for All Families
We want to end with a very important message: We support all moms, regardless of your feeding choices. Whether you choose to breastfeed, formula feed, or a combination of both, our priority is that your baby is healthy and you feel confident and supported. We are here to provide you with the information and resources you need to make the best decision for your family.
So, as we celebrate World Breastfeeding Week, let’s celebrate and honor the incredible dedication of new moms everywhere. We are so proud to be a part of your journey, and we look forward to supporting you every step of the way.
