Here at Comanche County Memorial Hospital, this week holds a very special place in our hearts. That’s because it’s National Nurses Week, observed annually from May 6th to May 12th. And this year’s theme could not be more spot-on: The Power of Nurses.
The Dedication of Nurses
Think about it for a second. Our nurses are the absolute backbone of everything we do here. They’re the compassionate faces you see at your bedside, the steady hands providing crucial care, and the sharp minds ensuring everything runs smoothly. They’re there for the highs and the lows, offering comfort, expertise, and unwavering dedication day in and day out.
Honoring Florence Nightingale
This week isn’t just a random date on the calendar, either. It actually wraps around May 12th, which is the birthday of a true legend: Florence Nightingale. You might have heard of her! As a manager and trainer of nurses on the battlefield during the Crimean War, her skills and knowledge were so on point that she dramatically cut down on infections and deaths. Pretty incredible, right? Because of her, nursing really became the respected profession it is today.

The Evolution of National Nurses Week
Believe it or not, the first time the U.S. officially recognized nurses with a special week was back in 1954. They held it in October to mark the 100th anniversary of Nightingale’s amazing work. Fast forward a bit, and in 1974, President Nixon made it official as National Nurses Week. Then, in 1990, the American Nurses Association (ANA) decided to expand it to the week we celebrate now, always including Nightingale’s birthday. It’s all a way to remember her legacy and just how much power nurses have to make a real difference in our lives.

Celebrating the Power Within Our Walls
Here at Comanche County Memorial Hospital, we see that power in action every single day. Our nurses are more than just healthcare providers – they’re advocates, educators, and a source of strength for our patients and their families. They bring a unique blend of skill, empathy, and sheer determination to their work, and honestly, we couldn’t do what we do without them.
